CHAPTER 3

I once again recall the time of 1908 of the Christian year. We [Yoganandaji and Satyanandaji] grew more and more close. It was as if the two of us could not stay apart. Our homes were next to each other. We used to try to stay together as much as possible. Even when we were separate, we were vigilant that both of us carried out our own responsibilities from one [set of principles]. He always kept me aware of this. To walk the righteous life, we created a situation where we both would eat in a disciplined way, behave [accordingly], exercise properly, regularly do japa and meditation and such other things. Two diaries were purchased for us to keep a daily journal. Although friendships were close on the football field, he decided at this time that if - on the path of sadhana - we wanted to protect ourselves from hindrances, distractions and the company of people who were outwardly oriented, we could not take part in these types of games in the usual kind of way. It is needless to say that my childlike heart was a little hurt by this act. Nevertheless, I bowed my head and accepted his words. It should be known that the usual restlessness associated with the age of childhood-adolescence was never able to overcome Mukunda. Yet in his younger days he was an athlete; he won prizes in races; he even used to train with weights. But at this time, the intense longing to attain God was fully awake in him, and as his companion, I also was becoming passionately filled with the same deep feelings.

Because of carrying myself differently from the usual lot of kids, because I was not at home very much, and because I - the "good and obedient boy" - was spending time with Mukunda concerned with spiritual things and somewhat neglecting studies and other things, my parents were saddened by this. One day, he [Satyanandaji's father] could not help but sarcastically blurt out, "Let's see how much of a Prahlad [child-saint of mythology] you have become." I admit that such a loving father would naturally be hurt upon seeing his eldest son suddenly begin to behave in this detached way, letting his studies slip and such things as these. Without stating this in a superficially fervent way, I can say from the depths of myself that the principles such as: adherence to duty, treating everyone with care, service and work of organized teaching continue to have the greatest influence throughout my life because of my epitome of a father. He gave me so much respect and support for my ideals and the duties that I had to perform in the working field, and gave my fellow-workers and fellow-servants such encouragement. He prepared so many things by his own hands and collected things to help me or our institution. Taking my students into the lap of his own affection, he gave them advice and practical counseling in unaccountable ways, for which he drew their heartfelt gratitude.
